Taipei—August 19, 2014— Trend Micro Incorporated, the global leader in cloud security, today announced the final winners of the “Trend Micro 2014 Codinsanity Asia Pacific Programming Contest.” Committed to fostering software development talent around the world, this year’s contest centered on the theme of "Big Data" and challenges the ability of contestants to solve big data problems. This year, for the first time in its history, the contest was open to 12 regions around Asia, attracting up to 422 teams to enroll in the contest. After four rounds of feverish preliminary online eliminations and 24 hours of final competitions held live in Taiwan, Team Liadri from the Philippines took the final championship, surpassing the strong competition displayed by the other 9 finalists from Taiwan, Japan, China, and the Philippines. The champion team walked away with US$20,000 in prizes.
"Big Data has become a focus of technology development in the cloud era, with applications in business, economics, and other disciplines," said Eva Chen, CEO and Co-founder of Trend Micro. "Responding to this trend, we are hoping to take advantage of the opportunities offered by cloud computing and open up infinite possibilities for technology development by fostering young talent around the world and honing their skills in solving big data problems while thinking outside the box with innovative ideas."
"With over 25 years of worldwide big data and real-world experience based in Asia—where new forms of cyber technologies and data science applications are quickly emerging—Trend Micro is confident in the technical prowess of software developers around Asia," said Jenny Chang, Chief Culture Officer and Co-founder of Trend Micro. "As a result, we extended the scope of this year's contest to 12 Asia-Pacific regions, creating an international arena for contestants from different regions to compete and learn from each other while expanding their global views. We were very glad to see that 422 teams enrolled in this contest, and the best of them demonstrated extreme excellence in technical skills, innovation, and team work with remarkable results. In a globalized era, we will continue to offer platforms for international exchange among young talent to spur innovation, and to take the software industry to the next level."
Facing the challenges of other top-notched competitors from Taiwan, Japan, China, and the Philippines, Team Liadri, consisting of four employees of a Philippine start-up company called Kalibrr, won the competition with their outstanding technical skills, high level of completion, innovation, and unwavering composure on the stage. Its solutions demonstrated remarkable thoroughness in both technical aspects and business applications, receiving unanimous votes from the judges. Trend Micro offered a total of US$50,000 in prizes for the top winners. The champions received US$20,000, while the first and second runner-ups received US$10,000 and US$6,000, respectively.
